On Saturday, March 27th, 2010, STEELTOWN ENTERTAINMENT PROJECT invites you to join us in our fourth panel discussion of our debut FILM FACTORY.


Point Park University


This workshop, sponsored by Point Park University’s Department of Cinema and Digital Arts, will focus on what happens in the filmmaking process once a project has been “greenlit,” and the challenges that occur during the production process. Three semi-finalists will present their production plans to a panel of entertainment professionals that include:

At the end of the panel 1-3 finalists will be awarded the $25,000 Production Prize and be selected to produce their short films in SWPA in the summer of 2010.

Deadline Submissions is December 31st!

Following the kick-off, aspiring filmmakers will be invited to submit their screenplays to the Film Factory online at www.SteeltownFilmFactory.org through December 31, 2009. A distinguished panel of judges will review all submissions through a blind review process. Submission rules and applications will be available online.

Entry fees for each submission are $50 for adults, and $25 for students with valid ID. Benefits include 1 free ticket to all events through May 2010. 

Participants must submit a 10-12-page script, logline, one-page synopsis, and optional sample of prior work. Following an intensive review, the judges will shortlist the 10 best scripts from the field for several stages of revisions and further development.
 
Throughout the revision process, public events featuring industry experts will be hosted around the SWPA/Pittsburgh region. Ticket prices to attend the public events will be $10 for adults and $5 for students with a valid ID per event.

“THE PITCH”
February, 2010 TBD

This event, hosted by the University of Pittsburgh, will focus on story development, how to pitch successfully, and the legal aspects of intellectual property ownership. Thereafter, the remaining finalists be invited to pitch their revised projects to a panel of renowned Steeltown advisors.

This workshop, sponsored by the University of Pittsburgh Film Studies Department, will focus on story development and how to pitch it successfully.

 

 

 

Hollywood is driven on creative content and always searching for the next great story. You have a great idea and a screenplay that you are confident and passionate about. Now what? How do you convince Producers, Directors, and Executives to invest in your film? Learning about pitch session procedures and understanding how to market you and your script is a critical part of the filmmaking process. Just when you thought the hard part was over, having already created story arcs, themes, and characterization, here comes “THE PITCH.”

Our five semi-finalists will be announced and invited to pitch their revised screenplays to a panel that features:

The ten semi-finalists will have their screenplays read publicly by the Acting Students of Carnegie Mellon University's renown School of Drama, while a panel of judges listens in, critiques the screenplays, and shares their industry perspectives on what's necessary to turn a good script into a great movie.

POST PRODUCTION AND PREPARATION FOR THE 2010-2011 SEASON

Post-production of the film(s) will occur during the months leading up to the Three Rivers Film Festival. Winning filmmakers will be guided by renowned Steeltown Advisers through the final stages. The winning films will be premiered at the Three Rivers Film Festival in November 2010.
 
During the Three Rivers Film Festival, the Film Factory will announce the launch of their 2011 competition, and the yearlong process will begin again.

GETTING STARTED: WHERE DO GOOD IDEAS, GREAT SCRIPTS & TALENTED FILMMAKERS COME FROM?

The competition kicks off at 10:30 AM on Saturday, November 7, 2009 with a filmmakers' brunch and panel discussion at the Melwood Screening Room, 477 Melwood Avenue, Oakland, in conjunction with the opening weekend of the Three Rivers Film Festival presented by Pittsburgh Filmmakers! Please arrive early to get a seat as tickets are first come, first served.

Tickets for the November 7th FILM FACTORY panel event are $10.00 adults, $5.00 for students with valid ID, and can be purchased at the door.

Saturday morning's FILM FACTORY kickoff event is entitled, "Getting Started: Where Do Good Ideas, Great Scripts, and Talented Filmmakers Come From?" The distinguished panel, to be moderated by Steeltown's co-founder and local screenwriter Carl Kurlander ("St. Elmo's Fire," "Saved By the Bell," "My Tale of Two Cities"), will focus on the various stages of script development and filmmaking, a theme that will be carried on throughout the Steeltown Film Factory.

Panelists for this event include Geoffrey Fletcher the screenwriter for the Festival's opening night film "Precious," and Pittsburgh natives such as screenwriter Rob Lieber, who as written screenplays for Universal Studios, Paramount Pictures, New Line Cinema, Walden Media, MGM and is currently developing the screenplay of "Septimus Heap: Magyk" for Warner Brothers; "Nicholl Fellowship in Screenwriting" Academy Award winner Stephanie Lord; and Lauren Elmer, Sony Pictures Classics Acquisitions and Post-Production Supervisor for "Gracie."

In combination with the series of panel discussions throughout the winter and spring of 2010, the FILM FACTORY invites students (aged 16 and up) and amateur filmmakers to submit original film ideas for the competition. The FILM FACTORY will start accepting submissions on November 7th with the deadline closing on December 31, 2009. Submissions must include a 10-12 page script along with a logline, a one-page synopsis and an optional sample of prior work, and may be made via the FILM FACTORY website at www.SteeltownFilmFactory.org/register.

A committee consisting of local and expatriate entertainment professionals serving as judges will choose the most promising screenplays, and the winning film or films will be developed into full-fledged productions during the summer of 2010 and screened at the 2010 Three Rivers Film Festival. Esteemed judges/advisers both locally and nationally include:

Lionsgate's John Dellaverson (producer, "Diary of a Mad Black Woman") "300" producer Bernie Goldmann, writer/producer David Hollander ("The Cleaner", "The Guardian"), Pitt screenwriting professor David Dellesandro ("Snakes On A Plane"), writer/director Melissa Martin ("The Bread, My Sweet"), and many others.

The total prize package is worth $25,000. The prize of $25,000 is available to be used to produce the winning film or films. One to three short films wills be chosen and the funds will be divided and awarded at the discretion of the judges.
